Bulk Secondary

Bulk secondary flux is an inexpensive flux typically used in secondary aluminum operations. It is used for some cleaning and oxide removal in large reverberatory and rotary furnaces.

Grades available include:

  • 860
  • 827

Cover

This is a general purpose cleaning and drossing flux, which is also used effectively as a cover flux. It promotes low metallic content in the dross and also helps keep furnace walls clean. It has good skimming properties for use in treating drosses.

Flux No. 770 is designed for use in both crucible and reverberatory type furnaces when melt temperature is 1275 °F - 1350 °F.

Degassers

Degasser is a tablet chemical addition in tablet form used in the degassing of molten aluminum. Degasser improves mechanical properties; improves castability; eliminates hydrogen gas porosity and removes non-metallics; eliminates hard spots; and improves machineability. Because it is in tablet form, expensive equipment is not required. All that is needed is a simple plunging tool.

FORMULATIONS:

Degasser tablets are available in the following formulations:

  • Degasser 185 - Recommended for use with high conductivity aluminum or on high magnesium containing alloys
  • Degasser 190 - Provides an active degassing action as well as grain refinement
  • Degasser 401 - A very effective degassing and cleaning agent that should be applied below 13,300 °F in order to take full advantage of the fumeless characteristics of the product
  • Degasser 450 - An effective degassing and cleaning agent that contains an inert filler that sinters together allowing the active ingredients to be dispersed at a slower rate
  • Degasser 601 - Combines the benefits of easy application and low smoke

APPLICATIONS:

Use only clean and preheated plunging tools. Moist tools can cause a metal explosion. Melt down the charge under a layer of flux to reduce oxidation and help reduce inclusions. When the temperature is below 14,400 °F and falling, the surface dross should be pulled to one side. Plunge the required quantity of degasser slowly to the bottom of the melt using a preheated plunger.

Recommended Amounts for 100 lb. Heats:

Grade Amount of Degasser
185             4 oz.
190             4 oz.
401             4 oz.
450             6 oz.
601             6 oz.

Because excessive metal heat causes hydrogen pickup, be sure that degassing is performed when the temperature is falling.

Because a gentle rolling action creates more efficient degassing than a turbulent action, it may be necessary to apply degasser in two or more successive operations.

When working with aluminum-silicon alloys, the combined degassing-grain refining treatment should always be done before sodium modification.

Depending upon the melting conditions and charge materials, 2 to 3 lbs. of degasser per 2000 lbs. of melt are generally sufficient. Slightly larger application rates are recommended for smaller heats.

Remove the wrapper completely before tablets are plunged. Never let the wrapper enter the melt as gas pickup and smoke will result.

Exothermic

Asbury exothermic flux is designed for complex treatment of aluminum foundry alloys at lower temperature ranges (1200 °F - 1240 °F).

For injection, Asbury flux may be effective at an addition rate as low as 0.02 lb/min for treatment of each 1000 lbs. of molten metal.

For manual drossing applications, sprinkle No. 711 over the dross surface to create a 1/4"-1/2" layer of flux and rabble it in. Allow the flux to activate for 3-5 min. After a brief period of glowing, dross will appear dry and powdery.

Grades available include:

  • 707
  • 711

Grain Refiners

Asbury TizoxTM grades 161, 204, and 322 are designed to accommodate foundries and smaller aluminum melters who require the excellent and economical grain-refining properties offered by Tizox.

Asbury Tizox grain refiners are placed on top of the melt and stirred with a skimmer. The tablet will disperse rapidly, usually in less than a minute. Stir melt with a skimmer for several minutes; complete dispersion will occur within 10 minutes. A plunging tool is also a suitable method for introducing tablets.

Sodium Free

Sodium free fluxes are designed for the treatment of aluminum foundry alloys. They can be used in the production of high magnesium alloys and alloys modified with strontium.

Applications:

For manual drossing:
Sprinkle approximately 0.5 lb to 1 lb. of flux per 100 lbs. of metal on the solid charge. When the charge is completely melted, apply an equal quantity on the dross surface and rabble it in. Allow the flux to work for 3-5 minutes. Dross should be dry and powdery after the treatment.

By the injection method:
Injection rates are effective at approximately half of the manual application rate. Injection rates as low as 0.04% lb/min can be effective.

Grades available include:
  • 712
  • 879

Wall Cleaner

This flux is formulated to remove solid aluminum oxide, which typically accumulates at the metal line of reverberatory melting furnaces. It is an aid to hand-chipping, which helps avoid the risk of damaging the brick during hand-chipping.

Grade 780 is a hot flux best applied to the walls with an aspirator. It can also be shoveled if care is taken to make sure the flux is directed onto the wall surface. Additional applications may be required. Once the walls are cleaned, they can be maintained by simply applying any Asbury flux on the wall as part of daily furnace fluxing routine.
