Bentonite

Bentonite, also known as sodium montmorillonite, is hydrous aluminum silicate clay mined in the western United States. Bentonite is a highly plastic clay and can be used to increase the “plasticity” of any clay, coating, etc., to which it is added. Bentonite can also be used as an effective suspension agent for many aqueous systems, especially those that will be exposed to refractory conditions.

Bentonite clay is unique in that when it absorbs water is actually swells due to the increase in size of the hydrated particles. This phenomenon results in clay that can be used to create “water tight” surface structures such as ponds and canals. Bentonite can also be used to seal water-containing surface features that are leaking, including earthen dams, retention ponds, stock ponds, fish ponds, etc.

Crumb Rubber

The uses for crumb rubber include fillers in rubber compounds, asphalt modifiers, extruded products, and rubber paving to name just a few. As the quality and supply of crumb rubber becomes more reliable, an increasing number of rubber manufacturers are exploring the possibility of incorporating this material into their compounds. If the processing method is properly chosen, the compounder will be able to achieve substantial savings in material costs. Improved mixing and curing properties are additional benefits that result from the use of recycled materials.

Other uses for ground rubber include:

  • Molded rubber products (e.g., carpet, underlay, flooring material, dock bumpers, patio decks, railroad crossing blocks, livestock mats, roof walkway pads, rubber tiles and bricks, movable speed bumps)
  • New tire manufacturing (up to 10% or higher as per Scrap Tire News)
  • Brake pads and brake shoes
  • Additive to injection molded and extruded plastics
  • Automotive parts

Dip Ladles

Joy-Mark produces a variety of ceramic fiber dip ladles and slag skimmers for use in all metal types. Our insulating CF300W rigidized composition is used for maximum service temperature and strength. These thermally efficient ladles and skimmers offer an economical and effective alternative to metal ladles and skimmers. Their durability enables the foundry to use them over and over again with little or no maintenance.

These dip ladles and skimmers feature the following characteristics:

  • Lightweight for maneuverability and ease of handling
  • Low thermal mass to reduce heat loss from metal to ladle or skimmer
  • Highly insulating to reduce heat loss to atmosphere
  • Strong and durable to allow multiple reuses
  • Non-wetting to molten metal
  • No preheating necessary after first use
  • No coating necessary
  • Economical compared to metal and full ceramic ladle and skimmer alternatives

The skimmers have nine 1/2" drain holes and are supplied in either a 6-1/2" or 8" diameter. Each is 1" thick with a 1/2" wide metal reinforcement ring embedded inside. The attachment handle is 1/4" by 1/2" and protrudes 5-1/2" from the skimmer.

Dip ladles are available in a wide range of sizes and capacities. They are convenient for the routine pouring of test bars, metallurgical samples, and even small size production castings. All of our dip ladles feature a double pouring lip design with a nominal 1" wall thickness.

Available dip ladles have the following capacities (at 80% full):

Dip Ladle Size (inches) Aluminum Brass Copper Iron Steel
DL-2 2ti x 2bi x 2h 0.50 lb 1.60lb 1.50 lb 1.30 lb 1.50 lb
DL-3 3.25ti x 2bi x 3.5h 1.50 lb 4.50 lb 4.40 lb 3.90 lb 4.00 lb
DL-5 5.12ti x 4bi x 5h 6.4 lb 20.4 lb 19.0 lb 17.0 lb 18.0 lb
DL-6 5.12ti x 4bi x 6.5h 8.3 lb 26.6 lb 25.0 lb 23.0 lb 23.4 lb
DL-7 9.5ti x 7 bi x 7h 29.0 lb 93.1 lb 87.0 lb 78.0 lb 84.0 lb

During their first use, Joy-Mark dip ladles and skimmers should be immersed in the metal bath and held there until off-gassing ceases. After this initial burnout, it is not necessary to preheat these tools for subsequent use.

Hot Topping Compounds

Joy Mark hot topping compounds feature a unique combination of insulating and exothermic characteristics for improved feeding of castings. They are available for both ferrous and non-ferrous applications. Foundries are able to reduce production costs due to the topping compounds ability to:

  • Reduce riser heat loss to atmosphere
  • Maintain open riser to assure continued feeding
  • Reduce piping in risers
  • Assure integrity of the casting
  • Increase metal yield
  • Apply easily

Hot topping compounds may be selected based on the following properties:

Guidelines for use of hot topping compounds:

1. For non-expanding exothermic toppings, the applied thickness should be equal to:

    a) One half inch for risers with a diameter of five inches or less

    b) Ten percent of the riser diameter for risers with a diameter greater than five inches

2. For expanding exothermic toppings, the applied initial thickness of the layer should be equal to four percent of the riser diameter. The topping should then expand to a thickness of ten percent of the riser diameter.

3. For risers with a diameter of three inches or less, an expanding exothermic topping should not be used. Instead, a faster burning, hotter, non-expanding material should be used.

Steel Shot & Grit

Quite simply, bainite shot has the ideal microstructure for steel shot, and is 40-50 on Rockwell C scale. It is best when shot meets this spec as-cast, since additional tempering typically creates micro cracks which are detrimental to shot performance. Because its microstructure is composed of upper and lower case bainite, Metaltec shot is at its final hardness 44-46 Rc as-cast, and therefore devoid of micro cracks. Conversely, the more common tempered Martensite is 62-65 Rc as-cast, and thus plagued by the defects the tempering step can produce.

SAE shot sizes (J-444) available include:

  • S660
