back to top Ceramic Fiber Gating Tile
Joy-Mark has developed a revolutionary new insulating ceramic fiber gating tile system that offers unique advantages over conventional ceramic tile. With proven performance in large iron and steel castings, these ceramic fiber gating tile components provide the foundryman a cost effective method for gating by substantially reducing the time and effort required to fabricate the gating system.
The system is based on a series of components with machined ends that are joined using connectors. Gating tile components assemble easily and fit tightly, similar to the way plastic plumbing from a home center assembles. No tape or re-bar is required. The final assembly is lightweight, so large segments or even the entire gating system can be assembled outside the flask and then lifted into place. Gating diameter is maintained constant throughout the entire run.
The Joy-Mark ceramic fiber gating tile system offers the following advantages:
- Lightweight, yet physically and thermally durable
- Low thermal mass, high thermal shock resistance
- Readily cut to desired length with a hacksaw or band saw. No diamond saw required and no wet tile to deal with
- Cut ends can be easily re-machined with a special cutting tool available
- Gating system can conveniently be pre-assembled outside the flask, and then lifted into place
- Reduced labor costs to fabricate gating system
- Fittings are more compact than conventional tile
Since ceramic fiber tiles of desired length can be created so readily, only 12” and 18” tiles are required for stock. Cut ends can be re-machined by hand with an available cutting tool. There is no need to stock the incrementally sized ceramic tiles of conventional systems.
Ceramic fiber gating tile components are manufactured in a similar process to that of riser sleeves, with a similar lead time. They are packaged like sleeves, either in a carton or palletized, and are available in any quantity. Shorter lead times, economically sized packaging, and fewer stock lengths required to fabricate the gating system all result in reduced inventory levels in the foundry and additional savings.
For those who prefer, the system is also available with non-machined ends (n/c), thus eliminating the need for connectors. Straight tile can be cut to desired length using a hack saw or band saw. Components are quickly and easily taped together. Since the components are so lightweight, large segments of the gating system can be pre-assembled and then lifted into the flask.
Joy-Mark ceramic fiber gating tile components are available in the following sizes and configurations, including machined (e/c) and non-machined (n/c) ends:
- A CF300WX LF-120 pouring sprue is available for use with the 2” component system. The outlet can be either e/c or n/c.
- A simple tool is available to re-machine cut ends. The tool should be mounted on a workbench for stability. Simply insert the cut end with a twisting motion and the re-machined end is ready for assembly.

Pour Sprues
Joy-Mark has developed a series of insulating pouring sprues and pouring cups for use in the Lost Foam Casting Process. These pouring aids are produced with high temperature CF300WL or CF300WS compositions and provide the metalcaster an economical means to ensure a smooth pouring process with the following advantages:
- Insulating to ensure that the hottest possible metal reaches the foam runner system
- Elimination of a foam downsprue, thus reducing both the amount of decomposition products created during the pouring process and metal temperature loss resulting from decomposition of the foam sprue
- Rapid build-up of head pressure with an adequate volume of metal to properly “pressurize” the system for controlled foam/metal displacement
- Elimination of inclusions caused by sand erosion in the sprue area
A wide variety of sprues and cups is available to fit any casting situation. We can also fabricate to your custom specifications.

Shank Ladles/Ladle Liners
Joy-Mark produces a wide range of ceramic fiber ladle liners for use in all metal types. Our insulating CF300W rigidized composition is used for all aluminum applications as well as smaller sizes in copper base and ferrous applications. Our insulating CF400 rigidized composition is used for larger sizes in copper base and ferrous applications. These thermally efficient ladles offer an economical method of transferring molten metal to production molds. Their durability enables the foundry to use them over and over again with little or no maintenance. Joy-Mark ladle liners and dip ladles feature the following characteristics:
- Lightweight for maneuverability and ease of handling
- Low thermal mass to reduce heat loss from metal to ladle
- Highly insulating to reduce heat loss to atmosphere
- Strong and durable to allow multiple reuses
- Non-wetting to molten metal
- No preheating necessary after first preparation
- No coating necessary
- Economical compared to metal and full ceramic ladle alternatives
Joy-Mark manufactures ladles with both an ID and OD forming process. The 409 ladle is an ID formed part, which maximizes density inside the ladle to resist metal penetration and ladle erosion. The 409 also features a double pouring lip configuration. Single lip configurations are also available. The ID formed style is an excellent choice as a ladle liner. They are available in a wide range of capacities. OD formed ladles may also be used as ladle liners.
Joy-Mark also manufactures ladles using an OD forming process such as the 308 ladle. These ladles feature excellent control of OD dimensions guaranteeing a good fit in a pouring shank. The higher outside density also improves the resistance to physical damage from a pouring shank. The 308 features a double lip configuration, but single lip styles are also available, as are a wide variety of sizes.
Higher capacity ladles for shank pouring utilize an imbedded support frame to ensure ladle integrity through repeated uses. The 407 ladle is an ID formed part with an imbedded support frame in a single pour lip configuration. The 458 ladle is an ID formed part with an imbedded support frame in a single lip configuration. Double lip configurations are also available.
