Job Overview:

Responsible for managing the material analysis lab at Asbury Carbons which supports incoming quality analysis of carbon materials, customer quality issues and internal development projects.

 

Roles & Responsibilities:

The responsibility of the Technical Services Manager includes but is not limited to:

 

  • Manage laboratory testing and TS laboratory personnel.
  • Design characterization methods and procedures as required for testing raw materials (specifically graphite) as well as complex liquid matrices.
  • Development and reporting of key performance indicators (KPIs) for the quality lab
  • Control charting of critical quality properties of Asbury’s raw materials
  • Setup and management of Asbury LIMS system for the quality lab
  • Management of customer quality issues with Asbury finished goods.
  • Support of Asbury sales and business development teams through advising on best technical products for customer applications.
  • Visit customers to trouble shoot process problems related to products using Asbury materials.
  • Visit customers to present technical seminars that cover all aspects of Asbury products.
  • Participate in industry trade shows and conferences to stay up to date on latest use of Asbury products in industry.
  • Work with academia to promote the use of Asbury carbon products in their research.
  • Provide technical input to a limited number of technical societies or groups representing industries that utilize a significant dollar volume of Asbury carbon products. Current activity is with ASTM, MPIF, NLGI, CPCPC, and ACS.

 

Preferred Experience/skills:

  • A minimum of 10 years experience managing a materials science or chemical quality/analytical lab.
  • Minimum Bachelor of Science in a physical science or engineering discipline.

 

Requirements Specific to Title:

  • Extensive knowledge of safety best practices for handling of carbon/metal powders and hazardous chemical materials.
  • Extensive knowledge of characterization equipment used for solid materials (graphite, metals etc) and chemicals.
  • Extensive knowledge of testing metals and solid materials for critical properties (purity, grain structure, porosity, size, etc.)
  • Extensive knowledge of characterizing chemical solutions that contain graphite or other dispersed materials
  • Extensive knowledge of testing industrial coatings for friction, wear and critical properties
  • Ability to troubleshoot and fix lab equipment
  • Working knowledge of different forms of graphite and carbon materials.
  • Working knowledge of the structure and properties of metals, ceramic, polymers, and other engineered materials in which carbon and graphite are utilized
  • A basic understanding of terms, units, and concepts encompassing the fields of ceramic, metallurgical, structural, chemical, and mechanical engineering
  • The ability to communicate technical concepts to individuals who are non-technical or those who have technical training but are unfamiliar with carbonaceous materials.

 

Working conditions

The position requires employee to be onsite all working hours.  No hybrid or offsite flexibility for this management position.
