High-purity carbon material engineered for graphite, electrical, and friction applications.

Calcined Pitch Coke is a high-purity carbon residue produced through the destructive distillation of coal tar pitch. The calcining process removes volatile components and stabilizes the carbon structure. The result is a dense, high-carbon material with very low ash and mineral impurity levels, making it well suited for any industrial applications that requires a solid, stable carbon / coke is required. This includes electrical, graphite manufacturing, friction, and cathodic applications.

Calcined Pitch Coke

Pitch coke originates from coal tar pitch, a by-product generated during the thermal distillation of bituminous coal. Coal tar pitch is formed from vapors condensed during the coking process and therefore contains very low levels of mineral contamination.

When coal tar pitch undergoes carbonization and subsequent calcining, the remaining material forms a highly pure carbon structure with minimal ash and impurity content. Because the precursor material is condensed from the gas phase, the resulting pitch coke is inherently cleaner than many other carbon feedstocks.

Typical specifications include:

  • Carbon Content: >98%
  • Particle Size Range: 5″ down to 10µm powders

This combination of high carbon purity and controlled particle sizing makes calcined pitch coke an important raw material for electrical and mechanical carbon components.

How It Works

Coal Tar Pitch Feedstock

Coal tar pitch is produced during the thermal distillation of bituminous coal. As vapors condense during the process, they form a pitch material that contains relatively low levels of mineral contamination. Because of this origin, pitch coke derived from coal tar pitch exhibits very low ash and impurity levels compared with many other carbon materials.

Carbonization & Calcining

The production of calcined pitch coke involves two primary steps:

  1. Coking – Coal tar pitch is heated in the absence of oxygen, producing a solid carbon residue known as pitch coke.
  2. Calcining – The pitch coke is heated to elevated temperatures to remove remaining volatile matter and stabilize the carbon structure.

This process increases carbon purity and produces a stable carbon material suitable for advanced graphite and carbon manufacturing.
